500m Split. What does it mean?

For the on-water rowing community, the common measure of pace is generally “time per 500 meters,” which can be more clearly stated as “how long it takes you to row 500 meters.” This traditional measure has been brought indoors to the erg as well, and is now used by a majority of indoor rowers. But what does it mean? Why is it used? What are the other options? Continue Reading ›

We'd like you to meet Darlene Brennan. You may recognize that name if you have done any Concept2 team challenges, because quite often, she is at the top of the challenge standings board, rowing for the ANCIENTS team. Since 2008, she has taken part in eighteen team challenges where she ranked #1 on the individual standings eight times. In four of the eighteen challenges, she easily completed more than one million meters and in eight, she completed more than two million meters. She also set 2 new world records recently for lightweight 70-79 women—one for rowing a million meters in thirteen days and the other for rowing 100,000 meters in just under 12 hours. How does she do it and what's her secret? Darlene visited Concept2 recently and shared a little of her story. Continue Reading ›

Ken and Jon communicate regularly about their fishing, and most recently Ken sent us a really impressive collection of his fishing stats, accumulated from over 9000 games! We thought you would enjoy seeing them—and perhaps this will inspire you to try the Fish Game if you haven’t already. It only takes 4 minutes to play each game, but fair warning: it can be quite addicting! Continue Reading ›

This training advice seems especially pertinent to the holidays, when time is often at a premium. It’s also interesting to note that Larry was ahead of the times in recommending HIIT (high intensity interval training), which has been shown in a number of recent studies to be a very effective training tool. Shoe Choice

Mar 18, 2011

In my last post, I discussed the significance of foot position on the Concept2 Indoor Rower. Another important consideration is shoe choice. For some, this is as simple as using whatever shoes are available. If you are incorporating rowing on the indoor rower with running or other forms of exercise, then you’ll probably just use whatever trainers (shoes) you have and that’s fine. Shoe choice is largely personal, but I’ll throw you a few thoughts on the matter so you can make an informed choice.
